There’s something in the water in Philadelphia, a city that continues to produce exciting alternative music.
Alongside local acts such as The Wonder Years and Hop Along, No Thank You are rapidly cementing their place in a bustling scene.
This month, they followed last year’s debut, Jump Ship, with the delicately beautiful All It Takes to Ruin It All. Drawing from Stateside crossovers such as Rilo Kiley, and the emotionally charged class of the ’90s and early ’00s, they have found inspiration in grief.
There’s darkness to their sound, but it’s the floating nature of their melodies, mixed with some serious grit, that pushes No Thank You forward. Where their debut laid some highly commendable foundations, personal struggle, anger and subsequent positivity have added a poignant new layer.
Melancholic vocalist Kaytee Della Monica handles emotions with ambiguity, exploring feelings with equal parts sadness and hope.
No Thank You easily escape the risk of becoming lost in their scene. It’s only the start for the trio, who should have every chance to match and even surpass their hometown peers.
